If a datafile has fields, the area above the Freeform Text Area has two modes. If the datafile is freeform only, with no fields, there is only one view; it is always in List View, showing just the first line of the Freeform Text Area.
If a datafile has fields, it will show either a list of records with the fields in columns (List View), or the fields of the current record in a vertical list (Basic View). You can toggle back and forth between the two views with a button in the Toolbar. The button changes, depending on the current view.

You can also switch between view by selecting Switch View under the View menu, or by typing command-shift-V.
